What are Malleable Iron Pipe Fittings?

2022-03-12 16:17:42

Malleable Iron Pipe Fittings hold two different fittings together and guide the movement of gases and liquids. Some malleable fittings are threaded, which means they have grooved ends that allow the plumber to screw the fittings onto the pipe, allowing the plumber to connect the different pipes together.

Malleable iron fittings are available in black and galvanized finishes. The three forms of malleable iron include white center, black center, and pearlite malleable iron. White-centered malleable cast iron has ferrite in the surface area. Intermediate tempered carbon, ferrite and pearlite. Tempering refers to the hardening of the metal. Black-centered malleable cast iron is made mainly of ferrite. Pearlescent malleable cast iron is made of pearlite and other austenitic products. Pearlescent is made from alternating layers of ferrite and carburized.

Ductile fittings come in a variety of shapes, depending on the application in which the plumber will use the fitting. These shapes can include elbows, which are fittings that are bent to feed the pipe in a specific direction. Another type of fitting, the side exit elbow, is similar to a regular elbow, but with the addition of a side exit. A tee has three openings, two at the ends of the pipe and one on one side. The side exit tee has four openings, one for the side exit. Crosses have four openings, each with a corresponding opening on the other side. These different fittings allow the plumber to feed the pipe in different directions and allow the pipes to feed into each other.

Malleable Cast Iron is an iron-carbon alloy that engineers can heat treat. When first cast, the iron does not have any graphite. All of the carbon content is in the form of carburized bodies. Malleable iron typically contains 2% to 3% carbon, 1% to 2% silicon, 0% to 1% manganese, and small amounts of sulfur and phosphorus. Malleable cast iron has high toughness due to its spheroidal graphite and low carbon content. The graphite is formed in such a way that it is not spherical but irregularly shaped.

Engineers prefer malleable cast iron for parts that require die casting, piercing, or chill forming. Cold forming is the process of rolling or pressing a thin steel sheet into a usable material. Malleable iron is used for parts that require the highest machinability, which means they are easily machinable. It is also suitable for parts that need to resist impact at low temperatures.

We also offer Carbon Steel Fittings, so please feel free to contact us if you need them.
